Monday Book Group Update
Monday Night Book Club will meet on Mon., Jan. 15, at a different location! We will meet at Joan Mitchell’s house, 1510 27th Avenue (across from GA), at 7:00 p.m. We will discuss pages 1-99 from Sherman Alexie’s You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me. See you there!
Wednesday at GA on January 17
Join us on Wednesday the 17th beginning with dinner at 5:00 p.m. followed by activities for all ages beginning at 5:45 p.m.
Radio Mark at GA
You will want to be at GA worship January 21, 28, and February 4 for the production of: Radio Mark! We will be reading the Gospel of Mark in its entirety, in 3 segments (about 30 minutes each), “in voice”; meaning each character in the Gospel text for the day will have a separate voice actor to read that part, plus a narrator. Yes, just like an old-fashioned radio show!
Our GA voice actors will sit up front, stepping up to the microphone when it’s their turn to speak.
Hearing a Gospel in a large segment, rather than the small verses that we usually hear in the Revised Common Lectionary, helps us as listeners to discover the bigger scope of the story, and to hear themes that are repeated throughout Mark’s story. It is believed that Mark’s Gospel was originally passed along by telling the story orally, rather than writing, so this format may be more truthful to the original intent than we have realized.
Annual Congregational Meeting
Sunday, January 28
All members of the congregation are encouraged to attend our annual meeting of the congregation after worship on January 28. We will hear and read reports from staff and groups within the congregation, elect new church council members, and take action on the 2018 budget. Obviously, this is a very important meeting that takes place each year in January. We hope for good attendance and participation.
2018 Offering Envelopes
Envelope boxes for 2018 will be available in the Narthex for all GA members who are not enrolled in the “Simply Giving” program. Please take a moment to find your envelopes. Perhaps you can take a box or two for a family member or a neighbor as well. If for some reason, there is no box of envelopes for you, please contact Phil Holzman. One Note! The majority of envelope numbers stayed the same as last year. However, if your number was higher than 624 in 2017, you have a different number for 2018. We ordered fewer boxes of envelopes this year to consolidate and save money!
The colder weather at Christmas and into January should remind us that many school kids don’t have proper winter gear. We will collect hats, scarves, mittens and gloves all during the month of January and deliver them to local schools. The collection box is located in the Narthex.
